Solmaz Shahalizadeh is the Vice President of Commerce Intelligence at Shopify, leading the teams responsible for leveraging data and machine learning to reduce the complexities of commerce for millions of businesses worldwide. In her role at Shopify, she has build the company’s financial data warehouse, playing a critical role in their successful IPO, implemented and scaled the company’s first machine-learning products, and built multiple cross-functional teams. Solmaz champions a company culture that makes ethical, data-informed decisions and is passionate about building high quality data products to improve the user experience.
Solmaz has had an extensive career as a data scientist, working at Morgan Stanley as an analyst and at McGill University. At McGill, Solmaz contributed to cancer research by using artificial intelligence and bioinformatics methods to build predictors of outcome for breast cancer, and has published peer reviewed papers in the space.
Solmaz is passionate about diversity and inclusion, both within her workplaces and in the companies and causes she supports. As an advisor to startups, VCs, and now as an active angel, Solmaz wants to see more women of colour leading and contributing to products employing data and AI. Solmaz came to Canada 15 years ago as an international student, and now as an immigrant, she is hoping to support founders with similar backgrounds that don’t have access to the traditional networks of opportunities.
