Erin Zipes (she/her) is Vice President, Assistant General Counsel at Shopify, where she originated, built and scaled the corporate legal function from pre-IPO (NYSE and TSX) to present. Her work is currently focused on corporate finance and capital markets transactions, strategic equity investments and M&A transactions, governance and supporting the Board of Directors, supporting Finance, Investor Relations, Public Relations, Marketing and Communications, and is a trusted resource for a global team of senior leaders.
Erin has over 15 years of experience as a corporate/securities lawyer, 10 years of which as Assistant General Counsel for cross-listed public companies. She was previously Assistant General Counsel of Nordion (formerly NYSE and TSX), and started her legal career at Stikeman Elliott.
Erin has a deep understanding of cultural, legal and compliance issues and the challenges of a founder-led tech company undergoing sustained hypergrowth. She prides herself on being collaborative, having a value-add focus, and being a trusted partner to business and support-function colleagues who welcome her advice both legal and strategic.
More recently Erin has been spending time advising startups and angel investing, with a focus on those founded and led by women. She is a founding member of SheBoot, an Ottawa-based 6-week bootcamp that prepares founders to pitch their business and secure investments. She currently acts as Advisor, Partnerships and Overall Strategy, to Heirlume, an AI-powered trademark registration start-up.
Erin lives in Ottawa with her husband, two children and dog.
